Advocates are reviving the effort to legalize Georgia gambling next month. They are pitching the financial benefits of sports betting, horse racing, and casinos. According to Pay Per Head sources, legalized sports betting has the best odds to advance in the legislature.

Representative Ron Stephens said that sports betting is the easiest to pass. Stephens is the chairman of the House Economic Development and Tourism Committee. Legal sports betting doesn’t require a constitutional amendment. Also, it only requires lawmakers to give the Lottery Commission authority to oversee sports betting.

It has been around a decade that lawmakers have been trying to legalize parimutuel betting on horse races and casino gambling. However, they failed to get the two-thirds majority in the state Senate and House for constitutional amendments. Thus, they were not placed on a ballot.

Status of Georgia Gambling

On the other hand, sports betting only require majorities to pass the House and Senate. Also, it requires a simple amendment of the law that created the Lottery in the state. According to sports betting solution providers, sports betting has the advantage of being a newcomer. Lawmakers are not tired of talking about it in the General Assembly.

Based on sportsbook pay per head sources, four professional sports teams in the state support sports betting. The Falcons, Atlanta United, Hawks, and Braves formed a coalition to lobby the legalization of sports betting in Georgia.

The professional teams hope that sports betting can generate more fan engagement, especially during the shortened seasons. Also, they are losing money due to the limited attendance during the pandemic.

The sports coalition will bring the sports betting revenue from almost two dozen states. In Tennessee, online sports betting generated $131.4 million in November. It averaged more than $4 million a day after the state legalized the activity on November 1.
