New York Sports Betting Suffers Weakest Week During MLB All-Star Break

Last updated on August 1st, 2024 at 09:27 pm

The top sports betting market in the US suffered its weakest week in almost a year, according to the latest report from the NY Gaming Commission. The New York sports betting handle from July 15 to 21 totaled $224.6 million, the lowest handle the state had seen for a week since August 2023. Also, its revenue for the week was $25.1 million. It was the second time in eleven weeks that the state failed to earn at least $30 million.

The betting handle decreased by 26 percent compared to the previous week, and sports wagering revenue was reduced by almost 27 percent.

9DollarPerHead.com reports that summer is the slowest season on the sports calendar. During this time, the NBA, NHL, and NFL are in their offseasons. Thus, bookies rely on baseball to remain profitable in summer. However, Major League Baseball is not as popular among bettors, so handles are lower during the season.

New York Sports Betting Market

New York Sports Betting Suffers Weakest Week During MLB All-Star BreakThe week between July 15 and 21 was unique. Players had no pro sports to wager on for most of the week because the MLB was having its all-star break. Thus, there were no games from Monday to Thursday. The league held its Home Run Derby on Monday and the All-Star Game on Tuesday. There were few betting options on Wednesday and Thursday.

The MLB returned from the all-star break on Friday. However, it was not enough time to save the sports betting handle for the week. In addition, the Paris Olympics provides betting opportunities that players aren’t accustomed to witnessing during summer.

Sportsbook player segmentation is vital during summer due to fluctuating sports schedules and diverse player interests. With major sports leagues often in their off-season, betting patterns can change dramatically. Sportsbooks can tailor promotions, offers, and content to specific groups by segmenting players, ensuring higher engagement and retention. For instance, some players might shift focus to niche sports or international events. Effective segmentation allows sportsbooks to identify these trends and adjust their strategies accordingly, maximizing profitability and maintaining a competitive edge when traditional betting activity may decline.

New York Remains on Top

Both the Mets and Yankees are still in contention for the playoffs, so baseball betting in New York will remain strong. As the weather gets colder, the games will become more exciting. Also, the NFL season is just a month away. Thus, sports wagering in New York is creeping out of the slowest period of the calendar.

Despite the summer’s slowdown, New York remained the top sports betting market. The state took in more than $12 billion in sports wagering revenue. The nine sportsbook operators in the state earned more than $1.1 billion and paid over $570 million in taxes, which is higher than the previous year. In the same period in 2023, New York had a sports betting handle of $9.7 billion, earned $888 million, and paid $453 million in taxes.
