However, he conceded that legal wagering is significant, noting that this industry brings in money through gaming taxes. While this is happening, Shapiro pointed out that some bettors do their business in areas where it is illegal. Still, they do it through underground markets or offshore operators, which means the state doesn’t get any tax money.

However, not everything is good news for the state. The growth of sports betting has also raised new concerns. As software used for sports betting proliferates in the US, gambling addiction hotlines experienced an increase in calls.

The Problem Gambling Helpline in Ohio recently noticed a dramatic uptick in calls. Ohio for Responsible Gambling reported a 55.6% spike in calls to the state’s gaming hotline, which Mahoning Matters disclosed.

In 2022, 6,835 calls were received; however, in 2023, the number of calls received by those seeking assistance climbed dramatically, reaching 10,637. In 2023, Ohio experienced its first fully operational year of regulated sports betting.

One positive aspect of legal betting in Ohio is that tax revenue receipts were close to $1 billion after the first year. According to sportsbook pay per head experts, legal sports betting brought in $936 million for the state. A percentage of the revenue also goes toward fighting gambling damage and helping individuals who struggle with gambling problems.
