Lawmakers in Ireland are considering changes to their gambling regulations. The 2022 Gambling Control Bill reviewed strict rules on gambling ads to protect the public. However, Irish lawmakers are considering adding exemptions for gambling charity ads.

The bill will go to Dáil Éireann on Wednesday and then to the Seanad for evaluation. This meticulous review ensures the new gambling industry regulations are thoroughly examined and considered.

New gambling rules exempt some groups from ad ban, backed by Minister James Browne. In an announcement made public by The Irish Times, he suggests exempting gaming companies or charities that promote “for a charitable or philanthropic purpose” from the advertising prohibition.

After politicians and people from the gaming and racing industries voiced their worries about the potential consequences of such severe limitations, the original plan was revised from a blanket ban. Gambling Charities Ads

Lottoland, which allows bettors to place wagers on the results of national lotteries rather than participating in the draws, expressed its concerns earlier this month. The company explained that Browne has still not met with the operator for a discussion despite addressing several issues in a letter to the Minister.

Late last month, GamblingCare issued a thorough report detailing the services offered throughout 2023. The service is sponsored and run by the Gambling Awareness Trust, an independent organization that aims to educate, study, and treat those impacted by problem gambling in Ireland.

The research from GamblingCare showed a considerable increase from 4,230 sessions in 2022 to 5,971 last year. The charity’s website also saw meteoric growth in 2023, with visits increasing from 14,000 in 2022 to over 103,000.
